Vulcano is a popular island for hikers. But if you’re looking for alternative hiking paths that go beyond the famous paths that unfold on the slopes of the crater, we recommend the Antica Via Reale. Built in the second half of the 18th century, when to govern the Kingdom of the two Sicily’s was Ferdinand I of Bourbon, it is an ancient mule track that connected the harbour to the small village of Gelso, in the south centre of the island. In recent years this street, commonly called “a strada vecchia”, has been enhanced and attracts more and more hikers.
We advise you to walk the five kilometres of its path in spring, when the island of Vulcano gives its best with an unexpected flowering of a thousand colours.
